Parenting Online: Why You Should Indulge Your Inner Editor

Last week I talked about managing our children’s screen time, and this week I look at the issue from a different angle: how parents should handle themselves online.

I touched on this topic here back in the fall. In a nutshell, I think we should follow the “first do no harm” principle. This is what I think about when I’m writing about my kids: if I say or post this publicly, could it affect them in a negative way?

We have a duty to respect and protect our kids’ privacy to some degree. This may sound funny coming from a guy who writes about his family in a newspaper and online, but I think there are limits to what we should share. Not everything has to be said — or written — out loud.
