The Upside of Autism

A few weeks ago I wrote about our journey since our daughter was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. In my Chronicle Herald column today I talk about some of the things I appreciate about having a child on the spectrum.

I won’t lie, it’s definitely challenging. But I want to draw attention to the fact that it’s not all doom and gloom either. It’s just different.

  1. I’ve read your column about “some of the things I appreciate” and it is so true. As the mother of a child with Ehlers-Danlos (a connective tissue disorder that affects her daily functioning), I have learned to appreciate every little moment as they are instead of having expectations specific to other teens her age. Life is so much nicer that way. It’s not like we know how things will turn out every time we bring a child into the world. Society dictates what is to be expected, yet there is so much more to learn from and appreciate. Thank you for sharing these little moments of truth.
