When Kids Are Mean

Column day. This week I talk about one of the difficult parts of parenting: helping your kids when other kids treat them badly.

Kids pick up pretty quickly how to be mean to each other. And mine have been on both sides of the equation.

My boys are still young enough that they get over these things fairly quickly. But man… it can be rough out there. And kids are most empowered to be mean when they can rely on the pack, or say things anonymously.  This is why the Internet has such dangerous potential. It’s not limited to teenagers, either. Read the comments on any online news site and you’ll see how quickly people will spout off hurtful, thoughtless things when they don’t have to sign their name to it.
