Apologies for the relative silence on the blog. I’ve been typing up a storm lately, just not here. I’ve been writing—or more accurately, re-writing—a book I’ve been working on for more than a year now. It’s a middle-grade novel (that’s ages 9-14 or so, for those who don’t know publisher-speak) with lots of humour, action, and occasional gross bodily functions—as per the tastes of most 10-year-old boys. I had a literary agent express some interest back in August, but he asked me to think about some substantial changes… five months later, I’m still working away.
As you can imagine, it’s not easy to write an actual book while working full-time, raising four kids and doing some freelance work on the side. I’ve written most of the last 25,000 words or so on the bus during my daily commute. (That’s where I’m typing right now, to post later tonight.) But I’ve hit that wonderful and elusive writerly place where ideas are flowing freely and all I want to do is keep going. If you’ve had a conversation with me recently and it seemed like I was only half paying attention, it’s probably because I was crafting witty dialogue and epic ninja vs. superhero battles in my head.
So that’s where most of my creative energy is going at the moment, but I’ll still make a habit of posting here regularly. In the meantime, to tide you over, here’s a cute picture of a baby with food on his head.
